The exhibition showcases paintings from the East Prussian art collection of Aleksandr Popov from Klaipėda.
In this exhibition we invite the visitors to take a closer look at the works of historical Nida artist’s colony (which was active from the end of the 19th century until 1945) that reflect typical motifs of the local landscape: the silent grandeur of the sand dunes, the so called “Italian view”, the fishermen’s women looking anxiously at the sea, their humble houses, who often lost to the waves of sand, and the fishing boats Kurenkahns bobbing on the harbours in the evening calm, awaiting for their great departure.
For the artists who came from East Prussia or from German cites to the Nida artist’s colony, the unremarkable everyday life of the Curonian Spit was full of magic, of a mysterious, archaic spirit of being, floating above the narrow strip of sand between two waters, an inexhaustible source of creative energy.
